Bump stocks are back up for debate in the General Assembly after the original bill hit a road block.
House Bill 1467, which would ban bump stocks and trigger cranks, already passed both chambers. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, isn’t happy about an amendment made in the Senate.
Moylan said the changes water down his bill. He said he plans to either remove the amendment or create an entirely new bill, but doesn’t have a time frame of when that’ll happen.
To move things along, the Senate drafted their own bans in a package of bills.
Sen. Kwame Raoul, D-Chicago, is the sponsor of Senate Bill 2343, which was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee in a 8-3 vote.
According to the Senate Democrats Caucus staff, SB2343 bans bump stocks and trigger cranks and is very similar to Moylan’s bill.
Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield, is the sponsor of Senate Bill 2314, which was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee in a 7-5 vote.
According to the Senate Democrats Caucus staff, SB2314 is the language from the amendment made in the Senate to Moylan’s bill. It would allow local communities to regulate and restrict assault weapons.
